The Evangelical Mess

I read Michael Spencer more than any other Christian blogger-type. He’s consistently opinionated and yet humble. His take on the Protestant authority issue is spot on. Little men, waving big Bibles, ranting about submission does little, if nothing, to commend the gospel or build the community of faith. Here’s an excerpt from Spencer’s An Ideal Evangelicalism:

Evangelicalism would be better if it would admit and address its authority issue. Evangelicalism consists, to a large extent, of groups and individuals waving Bibles and shouting verses at one another. Evangelicals use terms like “Biblical Christianity” as if they could actually produce such a thing if asked. The assumption that our views are “based on the Bible” has produced a cacophony of contradictory, divisive and endless claims, counter-claims and wars. The evolution of evangelicalism seems destined to be toward the opposite poles of abandoning the concept of authority completely to the individual (usually the charismatic pastor) or creating an authoritarian hothouse where complete submission is obligatory to avoid exile or worse. Evangelicals have an authority problem. They will quite possibly never solve it as evangelicals, but they can make the situation considerably better by directly addressing the problems created in Protestantism and evangelicalism by our various approaches to authority and implementing serious measures to bring some coherence to the situation.

Happy Thanksgiving

Today I’m thankful for my family, friends, and life. I’m thankful to the Giver of life everlasting. I’m going to enjoy the day with many of the people who mean the most to me, watch some football, and study a tad.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

The Latest

I had five major assignments due last weekend. This graduate school deal is busy. Too busy sometimes! Having said that, I’m home with my family today and expect things to progressively taper off during the next couple of weeks.

Beth’s pregnancy is going well. Evidence indicates that the baby is getting bigger. We’re doing our best to get ready and come up with some names. Bye for now.

Hi Folks

I’ve been on my feet for a couple of weeks now. Scar tissue is growing in my tummy, a process called adhesion, and that hurts a bit. However, I count my blessings: My appendix didn’t burst.

This second year of grad school has been so much different than the first. There are less classes but I seem to keep busy with all kinds of things, not the least of which is my internship. I have been grateful to begin practicing what we’ve been talking about. I’m glad there’s a profession like counseling. I’m enjoying the process so far.

Our kids are doing great… we love them a ton and they are growing, including the one still in the oven. The due date is February 12th and Beth is doing well. The morning (a.k.a. “all-day sickness”) is long gone and each day brings us closer to another Smith.

The Unexpected

So I’m officially missing my appendix. I ended up at the ER at 3:30 and went into surgery at 7:10 a.m. I regained consciousness at about 9 a.m. I’m back home and all amped up on percocet. Ah, the unexpected joys of life. I’m looking at about a week of recovery.

Allright, Allright!

While I don’t feel Obama is fit for the highest office in the land (for a ton of reasons) imagining McCain saying, “Who’s more presidential now?” in this picture makes me laugh. See? Funny.
